Richard Askew

Whitwell Brass Band are saddened to learn of the death of Richard Askew following a battle with Cancer. Richard had been the band's Bb Bass player for a number of years having previously played for Shirland and Staveley Works bands.
Richard’s last performance with the band was in November at the Leicestershire Association Contest. Whitwell Brass Band will dedicate their performance in the Fourth Section of the Butlins Mineworkers Championships on Saturday to Richard. His son, Ben will be part of the band on Bb Bass. Richard would have wanted the band to do well at Butlins and to play like we know that we can.
Our thoughts and condolences are with his wife Karen, sons Ben and Will, and daughter Hayley during this sad time. His experience, knowledge and humour will be missed by all in the bandroom.
The funeral service will take place at St Luke's Church, Shireoaks on Wednesday 25th January starting at 1pm.

For those of you who weren't at last night's rehearsal, there was a band meeting at the end of practice. It was meant to be a committee meeting but everyone wanted to attend, so apologies for not announcing it beforehand.
Due to Simon starting a new job and with his existing commitments with Yamaha, he asked that we look at rehearsals to try to get a better attended practice once a week. Following last night's meeting, the band decided rehearsals with Simon would be on a Thursday night, starting at the usual time but finishing slightly later than they do now. It is important for everyone to make the effort to get to Thursday practices and if unable to attend, please let Simon, Paul or me know as far in advance as possible. The room on Monday will still be available for a social rehearsal where whoever turns up can run through some small arrangements. This will be trialled up to the Areas.
Simon will be putting together a rehearsal schedule for the Areas. We will let you know as soon as it has been sorted.
If anyone has any thoughts, comments or concerns, please speak to a member of committee or send me an email. Your support over the next few weeks in making this work would be greatly appreciated by Simon and the committee.
